She Leads Her Home: What It Means to Lead Your Home With Intention

Your business isn’t the only place you’re called to lead.

Long before you open your laptop, respond to a client, lead a team, or make the next big decision in your business, there is leadership happening within your own home.

But what does it actually mean to lead your home well as a Christian mother?

As women building businesses and doing work we believe God has called us to do, I think sometimes we can forget just how significant our leadership at home really is.

That’s why in this week’s episode of Fun, Free & Flowing™, I’m talking about what it means to lead your home with intention and why the way we steward our homes matters to the way we show up everywhere else.

Our home.

It’s our haven, our inspiration, and oftentimes our utter and overwhelming chaos.

As women, we carry a tremendous amount of responsibility within our households, and that can create a huge burden for us mentally and physically.

But as leaders, our homes are also something we’ve been entrusted to steward.

Proverbs 14:1 says:

“The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.”

There is so much power in that verse.

As women and mothers, we have tremendous influence over the tone of our homes. We have the opportunity to build up rather than tear down and to intentionally cultivate peace, even when we can’t control everything happening around us.

And I want to be very clear: this isn’t about shame or guilt.

Your home does not have to look perfect for you to lead it well.

There will be hard seasons. There will be tired seasons. There will be circumstances and people you cannot control.

This is about asking yourself what God has actually entrusted to you and choosing to steward those things intentionally rather than passively.

Proverbs 24:3–4 says:

“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.”

The wise woman in Proverbs is intentional with the shaping of her home.

She may be tired, but she is purposeful.

She may have a lot on her plate, but she knows her priorities.

She may be in a depleted season, but she knows the impact she is making, even in the mundane tasks.

All you do within your home is Kingdom work.

So I want to challenge you to look at your own home leadership through three areas:

  1. How you speak of God
  2. How you live for God
  3. How you lead for God

How You Speak of God

In 1 Peter 4:8, we are commanded to love others and use our gifts to show people Christ.

Your home is the foundation of that. Your business is the extension of that.

This is about more than saying you love Jesus. It’s about how you speak about your faith and trust in God within your home.

Do you read Scripture together?

Do you pray together?

Do you work on your spiritual gifts together?

Do you build one another up?

Our kids are listening to how we speak about God, but they’re also paying attention to the environment our words and actions are creating.

The Proverbs 31 woman is someone who is diligent in the affairs of her household. She is not passive or reactive.

Proverbs 31:27 says:

“She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

As moms who run around 24/7, our lives are anything but lazy. But for me, this verse is also a reminder not to become passive about what I’m allowing to shape my home.

What is influencing you and your children?

What are you allowing to become normal?

Where have you been so busy keeping up with everything that you’ve stopped being intentional about something God has called you to steward?

Because being busy is not the same as being productive or purposeful.

Ask yourself:

What tone do we carry as a household? Is it one that glorifies God?

And if you see an area that needs to change, don’t try to overhaul your entire home overnight.

Choose one thing.

Maybe it’s praying before a meal.

Maybe it’s expressing gratitude for those within your home.

Maybe it’s saying sorry more often.

Maybe it’s disciplining with greater consistency.

Or maybe it’s pausing to actually see and hear one another.

Your business can be an extension of your legacy of building up the Kingdom, but it does not replace the Kingdom work being done within your home.

That is where so much of your real legacy is being built and fostered.

How You Live for God

How we speak of God within our homes directly impacts our kids’ understanding of the Lord.

But then comes the next question:

Does the way we live match what we say?

Our kids aren’t just listening to what we say about God. They’re watching how we live with Him.

Are we walking our talk, so to speak?

Galatians 5:22 gives us the fruit of the Spirit:

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Instead of looking at that list and immediately deciding you need to work on all nine, I want you to pick ONE to work on with Christ.

What is something you could do that amplifies joy and love in your home?

Do you need to create more peaceful moments and quiet time?

Do you need to practice being more patient together?

Do you need to express more gratitude for one another?

Do you need to be gentler toward one another?

Do you need stronger discipline around self-control?

Choose one and ask yourself:

What would it look like for my family to experience more of this from me?

Then choose an action step you can begin applying.

When we focus on allowing the Spirit to renew us, how we live inside and outside our homes begins to look different.

I’m a far more peaceful person today than I was five years ago.

Am I perfect?

No.

But there’s progress being made each day.

How You Lead for God

We’ve established how to bring God into your home and how to live your life with Him.

Now it’s time to lead with the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14:40 says:

“All things should be done decently and in order.”

Leading your home means taking responsibility for creating the rhythms, expectations, and systems that help your household function well.

What rules or expectations does your home need?

What do your home systems look like?

Where could greater consistency or discipline serve your family?

Every single thing we do can be a form of worship, and the choices we make in home stewardship are powerful.

We are teaching our children how to manage a home someday. We are crafting a home that allows us to worship, raise our children, and honor our marriages.

And this is a huge task.

God knows that.

That’s why He wants us walking alongside Him.

When our child makes a big mistake, He can guide us.

When we lose our patience, He can guide us.

When we are overstimulated by all that we manage and carry, He can guide us.

We often hear the phrase, “God won’t give you more than you can handle,” but the Bible doesn’t actually promise that.

There will be circumstances beyond what you can handle in your own strength.

The promise isn’t that you’ll always be able to handle everything yourself. It’s that you don’t have to.

God equips us with Himself and His Word as we undergo the learning and growing process.

How Your Home Leadership Impacts Your Business

So what does all of this have to do with your business?

A lot.

I’ve seen over and over again in my work with women that when home feels constantly chaotic, that pressure doesn’t stay at home. It follows us into our businesses.

The home is a concentrated effort on embodying certain values that have a ripple effect into the business.

The leadership patterns we practice at home have a way of following us into our businesses.

That’s why my challenge to you this week is to put down your computer and the hustle mentality for a little while and spend some time on the foundation of your home leadership.

What needs your attention there?

Can Your Home Be Fun, Free & Flowing™?

Absolutely.

A Fun, Free & Flowing home doesn’t mean a home without discipline, structure, responsibility, or hard days.

Your home can be highly disciplined and still be fun.

Your home isn’t meant to be all rules and no compassion.

Your home can feel free. Discipline in our actions and the way we steward our homes can create freedom from the burden of carrying it all while creating more consistent expectations.

And your home can be flowing.

As mothers, we have to practice grace. Not everything is a to-do list.

Some of the most important things we will ever cultivate are the relationships with the growing people within our homes.

This is near and dear to my heart because my home is one of the places where I experience true freedom, and I want yours to be too.

It’s one of the places I started with my business eight years ago, and God has continued to show me why it’s such an important foundation.

Our home is not perfect by any means, but it does model peace and calm, which allows all of us to operate more effectively inside and outside of it.

You don’t need a perfect home.

You don’t need complete control over everyone and everything happening within it.

But you can ask God to show you what He has entrusted to you in this season and lead faithfully from there.

Because the work you’re doing within your home matters.

It is Kingdom work.
